Twitter removes tweets by Brazil, Venezuela presidents for violating COVID-19 content rules

Twitter has made good — so far — on its pledge to crack down on tweets that contain false or misleading information about COVID-19 cures. The platform has deleted tweets by the presidents of Brazil and Venezuela and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for violating its ban on novel coronavirus-related content that “goes directly against guidance from authoritative sources of global and local public health information.”

“We’re focused on protecting the public conversation and helping people find authoritative sources of information on Twitter. There have been a number of measures we’ve taken in regard to COVID-19,” a Twitter spokesperson said in an email to The Verge. “We’ll continue to review and require the removal of Tweets that do not follow the Twitter Rules. This is an evolving global conversation and we’re committed to remaining vigilant.”

President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil had two tweets removed on Sunday which included videos of him endorsing hydroxychloroquine and calling for an end to social-distancing efforts, BuzzFeed News reported. Both chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are still unproven as potential treatment options for COVID-19.

Bolsonaro said in one of the videos that he has been hearing from Brazilians that they want to return to work. “Brazil cannot stop or we’ll turn into Venezuela.”

Facebook also removed a video of Bolsonaro from its main social network and Instagram on Monday, according to BBC News Brasil. “We remove content on Facebook and Instagram that violates our Community Standards, which do not allow misinformation that could lead to physical harm,” said Facebook in a statement about the removal to The Verge. Facebook removed the video because of Bolsonaro’s endorsement of hydroxychloroquine, reports BuzzFeed News’ Ryan Mac. The company confirmed that reasoning to The Verge.

Twitter had earlier removed a tweet by Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro (which is probably not what Bolsonaro was referring to) that endorsed a “brew” that would “eliminate the infectious genes” of the novel coronavirus. Twitter has had a long-standing position against removing tweets by world leaders unless the tweets violated Twitter’s rules with no room for interpretation, as BuzzFeed News notes.

And on Friday, Twitter removed a tweet from Giuliani which quoted a tweet by conservative writer Charlie Kirk suggesting that hydroxychloroquine had a “100% effective rate treating COVID-19,” Mediaite reported. Kirk’s tweets were also deleted.

Twitter outlined its COVID-19 policies in a blog post on March 4th, stating that it was taking a “zero-tolerance approach to platform manipulation and any other attempts to abuse our service at this critical juncture.”

It’s since removed misleading COVID-19 tweets by the likes of actress Alyssa Milano and businessman John McAfee. It also locked The Federalist’s Twitter handle after it promoted tweets endorsing so-called coronavirus chicken pox parties where people would deliberately expose themselves to infection. This is not recommended by medical authorities. (vanguard)

This season may be lost – UEFA president

Head of European soccer’s governing body has said that the current season could be “lost” if it is unable to re-start by the end of June, although he did not rule out extending it into the next season.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that there were a number of options for concluding the season, which has been brought to a halt around Europe by the coronavirus pandemic.

“There is a plan A, B and C. The three options are to start again in mid-May, in June or at the end of June, if we don’t succeed, the season will probably be lost,” he said.

The uncertainty around the continuation of the football season has thrown up a range of issues, including the fates of out-of-contract players, staff and sponsor payments and the Champions League and Europa League finals.

However, he then added: “There is also the possibility of starting again at the beginning of the next, starting the following one later. We will see the best solution for leagues and clubs.”

“It’s difficult to imagine all the games behind closed doors, but right now we don’t even know if we will resume, with or without fans,” he said.
“If there are no other alternatives, it would still be better to conclude the leagues. I can say that I’m not thinking about staging the European cup finals behind closed doors.

“It’s hard for me to imagine all the matches behind closed doors, but we still don’t know whether we’ll resume, with or without spectators.

“If there was no alternative, it would be better to finish the championships anyway,” he said.

“But I can say that I don’t think about the finals of the European club competitions behind closed doors.” Ceferin said finishing domestic leagues was the priority, even if it meant playing behind closed doors.

Ceferin said that the decision to postpone Euro 2020 until next year “has shown that every emergency is our emergency and every club is our club.”

He said that a video conference with representatives of clubs, leagues and players was “a fantastic demonstration of unity and solidarity.”

“It is important to forget personal interests and disagreements,” he said.

Nigeria will go into recession if Covid-19 continues beyond six months – minister of finance

Nigeria’s Minister of finance, Zaina Ahmed has said the country will go into recession if the Coronavirus pandemic persists longer than six months.
She made this known when she appeared on Channels TV on Friday March 27.
“We are hopeful that this pandemic will be limited in time. If it is an average of three months, we should be able to close the year with positive growth. But if it goes longer than that – six months, one year – we will go into recession.” she said

FIGC president hoping serie A will resume in July or August after CoronaVirus pandemic

President of the Italian football federation (FIGC) Gabriele Gravina remains hopeful of resuming the 2019-20 Serie A season, either in July or August amid the coronavirus crisis.

Just like other leagues around the world, The Serie A has been suspended indefinitely due to the Covid-19 crisis, which has claimed more than 21,100 lives globally.
Italy has been the hardest hit, with over 7,500 casualties and at least 74,300 confirmed cases, as hospitals and emergency workers struggle to cope.

Various Serie A owners have debated whether the 2019-20 campaign should resume or be cancelled but Gravina is not giving up hope on the current season following the postponements of Euro 2020 , the Copa America and the Olympic Games.
“For as long as I’m able to, I won’t lose hope of resuming the campaign. I’ll do anything to make that happen. I find giving up very difficult,” Gravina told Radio Marte.
“I’m aware that it’s still too early to think of a date, but we must think positively. We’ll try our best to even play at the cost of asking for support from UEFA and FIFA to go beyond June 30, therefore also taking advantage of July and August.
“Right now, there’s no room for individual interests. I plead for common sense because, ultimately, it’s the FIGC that will have to decide.
“Today [Thursday], there will be a new appointment with the government to work on a series of proposals that concern some amendments, which the government will assess, but there are many other issues of our relevance.
“We don’t want to ask for money, but we’re denouncing a state of crisis. We ask the government to help us with a series of measures to help modernise our game.
“We’ll see them , then we will meet again next week for a permanent and constant worktable, putting together indispensable ideas to form projects.
“I consider [cancelling the season] a defeat of mine and one that diminishes the value of the competition. It would lead to an unpleasant scenario.
“I stubbornly reject any reflections that lead to such a conclusion. For as long as possible, I will continue to reject these hypotheses.”
Prior to the postponement, reigning champions
Juventus were a point clear of Lazio through 26 matches in Serie A.
The last league game was played on March 9, with Sassuolo defeating Brescia 3-0. (goal.Com)

Pele depressed due to poor health condition- son

Football legend Pele is experiencing “a kind of depression” and barely leaves home anymore because health problems have left him unable to walk normally, his son said in an interview published Monday.
“He’s pretty fragile in terms of his mobility… and that makes him suffer a kind of depression,” Edinho said of his 79-year-old father, who has had a series of health problems in recent years.
“Just imagine, he’s the ‘King,’ he was always such an imposing figure, and now he can’t walk normally. He gets very shy, very embarrassed about that,” Edinho said in an interview published on the sports news site Globoesporte.com.
Pele, the pride of Brazilian football and the only player to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), is considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time.
He has been in and out of hospital in recent years for various health issues.
He never fully recovered from one of his hip operations, leaving him dependent on a walker, Edinho said.
“He’s doing a bit better than when he was in a wheelchair recently, but he still has a hard time getting around,” said Edinho, 49.
Pele’s public appearances have grown increasingly rare with age.
Last April he traveled to Paris for a promotional appearance with French rising star Kylian Mbappe, but had to be hospitalized shortly after for kidney problems.
In 2014, he was placed in intensive care for dialysis after contracting a severe urinary infection.
The Brazilian great, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has only one kidney, after a broken rib during a match forced doctors to remove the other.
He has also suffered a series of hip problems.
Edinho said despite those issues his father is “doing well” physically. (AFP)

Ighalo misses United’s training camp in Spain over coronavirus

Manchester United’s New signing, Odion Ighalo will miss out on the club’s winter training camp in Spain over coronavirus fears as United fear he would not be allowed back into the United Kingdom.

The Nigeria striker did not travel to Spain on Saturday with his new team-mates for the six-day camp.
United are worried that, should UK immigration opt to tighten border controls on travellers who have been in China within the past 14 days following the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus, Ighalo could be barred from re-entering if he was to leave the country.

Ighalo, 30, is currently in Manchester, will stay in England “on a personal training and fitness programme”. The English football club said “it is simply a precautionary measure as the situation continues to be monitored”.

“Odion will stay in Manchester because he arrived from China in the last 14 days,” United manager said.
“Because of the situation in China, we’re not sure if he’d be allowed back into England if he leaves the country again, so he’s staying here working with a personal coach, individual programme and his family then can settle in England as well. That’s a plus. “Of course he might have liked to come with the players and got to know them but the risk [of potential border restrictions tightening], we don’t want to take that.”

Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Lee Grant will all miss the camp due to injury. The Manchester United team will be returning to England late on Friday February 14, before their Premier League game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday February 17.

Setien loses first match as Barcelona manager

Quique Setien’s honeymoon period lasted less than a fortnight as he tasted his first Barcelona defeat on Saturday in his second La Liga game in charge after a 2-0 loss to Valencia.

A Jordi Alba own goal and Maxi Gomez’s strike at Mestalla raise early doubts about Setien’s appointment and give Real Madrid the chance to move three points clear at the top of the table when they visit Real Valladolid on Sunday.

Barcelona had most of the ball but their opponents had the best chances as Gomez missed a penalty and also hit the crossbar in the first half. Gabriel Paulista saw a third goal ruled out later on.

While performances under previous coach Ernesto Valverde were stodgy and familiar failings went unresolved, he left a side in first place.
Setien promised a new style but not many will cheer a team that loses. Despite dominating possession, Barcelona did little with it and as Valencia grew in confidence, they ceded control too.

“There are things they have not understood or maybe we have not have explained ourselves well,” Setien said afterwards. “In the first half, quite frankly, we were bad.”
The question is whether Setien is trying to impose too much too soon and perhaps whether this group are even well-suited his ideas.

“The players have to adapt to the coaching staff to understand,” said Sergio Busquets. “There were some good things but we have to improve.”
Valencia climb to fifth and continue to improve under Albert Celades. This success came without their captain Dani Parejo and, largely, without star striker Rodrigo Moreno, who has been linked with a January move to Barcelona.

The hosts hardly touched the ball for the first six minutes, their fans whistling as they urged a more aggressive approach.
But the plan was to sit and absorb and it worked, with Barcelona unable to cut through or create a single clear chance.
– Valencia dangerous –
And when Valencia did intervene, they were more dangerous too. With their first attack they won a penalty as Jose Gaya slipped past Gerard Pique and would surely have scored from eight yards before being brought down.
Pique was booked and, with Parejo absent, Gomez stepped up, only for his driven shot to be well saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, albeit with the help of half a yard’s headstart off his line.

Barca were riding their luck. Sergi Roberto’s header cannoned off Pique but fell just close enough for Ter Stegen, who parried a Gomez shot onto the crossbar and almost spilt another to Kevin Gameiro.
Referee Gil Manzano puts his hands together as if to apologise after failing to play advantage when Ferran Torres was clear but the frustration of Valencia’s fans turned to ecstasy shortly after half-time.

Pique’s flicked header landed at the feet of Gomez, whose driven effort took a cruel deflection off Alba and flew in.
Setien traded the patience of Arthur Melo for the physicality of Arturo Vidal and Rodrigo came on to a rousing reception.
Barcelona exerted some pressure and Lionel Messi led the way, hauled to the ground by Francis Coquelin and then denied by a brilliant Gabriel tackle. He fired past the post, headed wide and saw a curling free-kick saved.

Yet just as a Barcelona equaliser began to feel inevitable, Valencia struck again. A quick throw caught Alba out of position and Torres did well to cut inside and switch to Gomez. He took a touch and curled into the corner.
Gabriel thought he had a third after volleying in from a corner but VAR persuaded Manzano there had been a push. When Messi ballooned a late free-kick and threw his arms up in despair, Valencia knew their win was secure. [vanguard]
